Hi:
Some weeks ago, I responded to a thread on this list discussing
placement of head end cars. In my post, I discussed the fact that
I recently saw two slides taken in Denver of the CZ consist and a
switch engine. The engines happened to be two of the Alco S-2s,
but more interesting - at least to me - was the presence of
conventional, i.e., heavyweight head end cars placed between
the baggage car of the CZ and the engine.
Here is a bit of detail from the slides:
1.) Taken in April, 1960: a 19XX series baggage-RPO, and either
the 4600 or 4601, the 1935 Pullman-built chair cars of
transistional lightwight design. The CZ baggage car that day was
not the Budd car, but an aluminum-painted Havelock car.
2.) Taken in June 1960: a 8600-88XX ex-troop kitchen express
car (jeep), a 15XX 70 foot baggage, and a Pullman green painted
Havelock baggage. No RPO. Perhaps the RPO was only a five or
six day per week assignment and the slide was taken the off day.
The CZ baggage car that day was the usual Budd car.
As a bit of background, these head end cars - and chair car,
which could be a dead head move or not, were formerly carried
in the Coloradoan. The business was transferred to the CZ
when the Coloradoan was discontnued. The cars were added or
removed at Lincoln and Brush. The Brush connection was an
Alliance - Denver schedule.
I hope this helps and I apologize for the length of time I took to
respond.
Regards,
Ed DeRouin
