Depending on the decoder, it is not uncommon to have to replace the 
lamps or put in a resistor on the lamps. If it is a DCC ready loco with 
a drop in decoder, the lamps in most cases are already low voltage for 
use with DCC. In the case of N scale, most of the decoders are board 
replacements which include the lights. An example is the Digitrax DN163k 
which has replacement LEDs on the decoder board.
