As far as I can tell, the use of Flex-i-vans by the CB&Q was primarilly to
transport meat and packing house products (php). Unlike containers used by
NYC, Milw, IC, and others, the CB&Q containers were refrigerators. I
beleive that they were used to move said product from Iowa to Chicago in
dedicated service.
The Flex-i-vans were retired early. I do not have a date, but recall seeing
them stored in Chicago in 1970. The reason for the early demise was that
highway trailer on flatcar was less expensive than Flex-i-van. No bogey
storage, etc. With more traffic moving via TOFC, fewer passenger trains, no
express trains, the business shifted.
