I was asked to post a photo of my modified 60 foot RPO car, recently
released by Walthers under their Trainline series. Note that I added
ribbing to the "smooth" roof which now makes it correct for the Q. I
also cutout one of the doors to give it the open look and added a
figure in the door opening. I added another US Mail employee inside
sorting the mail.
The Walthers model represents the MA-11 series RPO - numbers 2325 to
2346. This same design was used by several other RR's including the
GN. The model has a lot of nice detail, including an interior with
all the RPO mail slots, etc. The only thing missing are the ribs on
the roof - the model comes with a smooth roof.
I started with an undecorated model. Adding the ribs was simple. I
used Evergreen StripStyrene, size .010 x .020. Using Bill Glick's
passenger car book as a template, I marked the locations for the
ribs and then glued them in place. A little trick on the lower
sections of the roof, I drilled holes into the side of the
clerestory roof very close to the roof line (below the windows),
this held one end of the styrene in place so I could bend it down
and cement it in place.
I purchased a second RPO, factory painted and lettered for the Q. It
has a black smooth roof which I am in the process of adding ribs to.
Now I have been looking at the Trainline RPO and Combine and with
the a little cutting and modifications, appears to me cound
represent class CO-4 #2752 passenger-baggage-mail. I may have to try
my hads at that one!
If you are looking for a good RPO, and don't want to pay the brass
price, I highly recommend this car, this car is a dead ringer for
the Q.
