Did you see on one of the links the number of bricks used for the defence
plant in Indiana? 22 million?!? In 146 days. They indicate 7-8 cars per
night were filled and sent. Now, let's see. That's a total of about 1168
cars. That's about 18,836 bricks per car. Which is about 169,520 pounds
or roughly 84 tons per car. It seems like 22 million bricks would take a
heck of a lot more cars than that! Of course, you would also have the
wood, glass, metal, piping, electrical, mortar, cement, etc. to build it,
but when you break it down, it some how loses the hugeness of the original
number.
But then.. one has to ask, based on your note - why Purlington for a plant
in Southern Indiana - surely there were plants closer to the building
site. And, why brick? Yes it was a munitions works, but seems like a lot
of travel in the days of "is this trip necessary".
I remember reading an article while living in Texas about the used brick
industry in the Chicago area where buildings were being bought solely for
the bricks , being torn down, sent by barge (?!) down to the South for use
in homes for that "old brick" feel. Have to wonder how many have
Purlingtons in them!

I have documented Humboldt, Nebraska labeled bricks at multiple
former Burlington platform locations in northern Kansas (Haddam,
Morrowville, Concordia, Washington) and southern Nebraska (Diller,
Odell, Hubbell). Were Humboldt bricks used instead of Purington
bricks at these locations because of geography, or because they were
originally on Burlington & Missouri in Nebraska trackage? These
small-town depots/platforms likely saw little updating over the years
so I suppose that too could be a factor. Thanks for the interesting
discussion.

Not CB&Q, but here is a photo that shows a herringbone brick pattern at
the M&StL depot in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Oskaloosa had their own brickyard
making "OSKALOOSA" brand bricks.
I have one from the streets of Oskaloosa plus one from the CRIP/M&StL
depot platform in Grinnell.

I believe that my daughter has a stack of Puringtons behind her house in
SE Iowa.
I used to have a few, but left them behind when I moved.

Yeah, Don, I know....
But if I do the artwork for brick platforms I might have it done in HO too
in spite of many of you guys being smart asses!!!!
Thanks to my architectural schooling I am very sensitive to proportions and
yes, size does matter!!

I'll hold off until the returns stop coming in for a summary of all the
responses; but in the meantime thanks to all that have contributed to
what is turning out to be an interesting topic!!!

Used bricks, called Chicago Common, were and maybe still are a
commodity that is regularly shipped from Chicago to Texas by rail. There was a
tariff for shipping Chicago Common. When I worked at the C&NW, a dump truck
would
unload bricks along the team tracks. Laborers would descend on the bricks,
chip off the old mortar, and then load them into a boxcar for movement to
Texas. They went out of Chicago on North Western's St. Louis line. I never
heard
about shipping them via barge, but I suppose it may have been done.
I was told Texas architects liked to use the brick in new construction
because of its aged, weathered appearance.

I've got a Humboldt paver from the depot platform at
Tecumsah, NE. Has anyone seen any from the Endicott
plant on the Wymore to Oxford line? Or was that plant
built after the era of station platforms?

Group, Last month there were inquiries on the 44 ton switcher. While
cleaning out my basement this week , I happened on a GE parts catalog on
this piece of equipment.. It contains over 100 pages of parts and numbers
plus many illustrations. It has quite a few pictures of the Caterpillar
model 17000 engine and much more. It is in a hard cover notebook type
format and has gold leaf type lettering on the cover. as follows: RENEWAL
PARTS FOR DIESEL ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVES CHICAGO BURLINGTON AND QUINCY
RAILROAD COMPANY CHICAGO ILL and then at the bottom is the General Electric
logo. It covers the following locomotives: 9103, 9104, 9105, 9106, and
9107. It came out of the Hannibal roundhouse. If anyone is interested, I
would like $25 plus shipping. Contact me off list at kliner@socket.net
