Used bricks, called Chicago Common, were and maybe still are a
commodity that is regularly shipped from Chicago to Texas by rail. There was
a
tariff for shipping Chicago Common. When I worked at the C&NW, a dump truck
would
unload bricks along the team tracks. Laborers would descend on the bricks,
chip off the old mortar, and then load them into a boxcar for movement to
Texas. They went out of Chicago on North Western's St. Louis line. I never
heard
about shipping them via barge, but I suppose it may have been done.
I was told Texas architects liked to use the brick in new construction
because of its aged, weathered appearance.
