Good afternoon from Palmyra!
I was in Galesburg this past Friday in order to catch westbound Amtrak #5
for a quick trip to Denver and back. I wanted to arrive early in order to
pick up my tickets and do a little railfanning at the Galesburg Amtrak
depot.
I about fell over when I saw a new building next to the depot with the words
?Galesburg Railroad Museum.? (I have uploaded a photo to the photos section
of the list)
As luck would have it, people were inside working and they graciously
allowed me to look around.
All I can say is WOW! China, uniforms, books, timetables, CTC panels, and
much more await the casual visitor. About 90% of the collection is related
to the Q ? the gift shop is well stocked and even has items relating to the
150th anniversary of the arrival of the railroad in Galesburg (be sure to
check out the golf shirts and the coffee mugs with the ?Parade of Progress?
print on it).
A formal grand opening is planned for later in April ? other tidbits are
that the Pullman ?Meath? is going to be moved across the street and added to
the string of cars behind Hudson 3006. More info can be found at their
website:
www.galesburgrailroadmuseum.org
This museum is a long time coming for the city of Galesburg and I strongly
urge you pay them a visit ? you won?t be disappointed.
Regards,
John Lewis
