I am enjoying the thread and thought I would toss in a couple of
comments:
1.) As kind of a rebuttal about Bob's comment about
photographers being selective, I suggest they may have been
selective but not because of a mixed consist. Recall that many
were interested in motive power. They focused on just the front
end. As one who shot coming and going, I can only say that
sometimes the going shot was too fast, blocked, or into the sun.
2.) As to why a dome coach was dropped from the
consist....there were too few passengers to run a full
compliment. Same is true for sleepers. By the late sixties, say
1968 plus, passengers were flockng away from trains.
3.) Keep in mind that what you see in print may not be what
happened. For example, the second section of the CZ was not
headed from Chicago to California. In reality, it was a section of
the DZ. The Q promoted the Denver business and filled the DZ
with that business.
Why a 2/17? Or 3/17? So that the sections could run ahead of the
DZ schedule. Recall the rules, a train cannot leave a station
ahead of schedule. It is easier for the operating department to
run sections than extras. The section has class, direction (rights)
and a schedule.
4.) If you really want to be prototypical, do not run the ACL
combine in the CZ. It belongs in the NZ and often was cut out at
Galesburg and run as an extra to Dayman. Remember, to switch
out cars from the front of a passenger train requires time, a
carman (for the steam line), and maybe an electrician. Those
crafts were not always available at outlying stations.
5) Yes, the DZ did pick up local stops as other trains were
discontinued. So did the CZ, but fewer because of the necessary
arrival time in Denver.
hope this helps,
Ed
