We are all familiar with "Everywhere West", "Way of the Zephyrs", the
olders "National Park Line" and original "Burlington Route". In
Botkin & Harlow's "A Treasury of RR Folklore" (the best single RR
book ever written in my opinion in terms of being a mini-cyclopedia
of RRing, especially from the human side) there is a section on
nicknames made from RR's initials/reporting marks (such C&NW's "Can't
& Never Will" or "Cheap & Nothing Wasted". These slogans, some in
jest by employees, include "Cheaper, Better & Quicker" which the
authors comment on as being a RR Marketing man's dream. I also
recall it being mentioned in Overton as well (or at least some CB&Q
oriented book). I just now found what for me is the earliest use of
the phrase AND in a CB&Q-published work, namely a pocket
notebook/calendar printed in early summer of 1887; to
wit: "Cheapest, Best & Quickest". (something Burlington men and
the traveling & shipping public knew a LONG time ago!) Amen!
