I just read your website story on the Nebraska Zephyrs, A very nice read.

I was a student off and on at Parsons College, in Fairfield, IA from 1962
until graduation in 1970. As such, I rode the NZ on many occasions to
Chicago at breaks (parents either met me there, or I took a cab over to the
IC Station, rode the Riley to Lafayette.

I never saw the NZ with fewer than 2 E's at any time, most often, 3 seemed
to have been used. Also, 6-7 head-end cars were pretty much the norm,
except at peak mail periods.

At Thanksgiving, and again at Christmas, the NZ would expand to upwards of
30 cars, virtually two complete passenger trains in one, due to all the
college student traffic in those pre-fly-everywhere-days. The Burlington
would drag out all sorts of old cars for those runs--we'd see them
deadheaded west to Lincoln or Denver the weekend before Thanksgiving, and
got stuck in them for the trip to Chicago on that Wednesday afternoon.

The worst trip, I think, was Thanksgiving break in 1963, due to a major
winter storm in E Colorado, NE, and western IA. The eastbound NZ was almost
4 hours late by the time it got to Fairfield. Fortunately, the dining cars
(3 of them) were well stocked, as all of us were hungry. At that time, it
wasn't unusual for as many as 400 Parsons students to board the NZ for
Chicago, some going home to the Windy City & 'burbs, some to OHare to fly,
but most making connections to the East out of Chicago's various stations.

Again,

Thanks!
