The Illinois Railnet has filed to acquire more trackage from the BNSF starting
on or after October 1, 2004. The lines included are the Mt. Morris Branch from
Oregon to Mt. Morris, IL and the La Salle Branch from Zearing to La Salle, IL.
They will also acquire trackage rights on the BNSF from Flagg Center to Oregon,
IL and from Montgomery to Zearing, IL.
The Illinois Railnet operates two separate line in Northern Illinois. Both are
former BNSF branchlines that BNSF spun off in 1998. The first line runs 56.6
miles south from a connection with the BNSF from Montgomery along the Fox River
to Streator. The IR also has trackage rights over 7.3 miles of track on the
BNSF from Montgomery to Eola Yard. Traffic is primarily silica sand. The second
line runs 23.5 miles north from a connection with the BNSF at Flagg Center to
Rockford. Traffic is primarily scrap steel. The railroad interchanges with the
BNSF at Flagg Center, Montgomery and Eola; CSXT at Ottawa; and the IC&E & UP at
Rockford.
Illinois Railnet is owned by North American Railnet Inc. which is headquartered
in Bedford, Texas. It is a privately held company that operates four other
Class 3 railroads in the U.S. They are the Nebraska, Kansas & Colorado Railnet;
Camas Prairie RailNet; Georgia & Florida Railnet; and Mississippi & Tennessee
Railnet. They also operate one Class 3 railroad in Canada, the Alberta RailNet.
