Any such work by people not familiar with steam locomotives should be
closely supervised by someone who is. Too many locomotives have been
damaged unnecessarily by asbestos abatement workers who simply cut things
off and scrapped what they cut off. Some have even cut holes in the boiler
shell.

The best thing is for a volunteer group to form and remove everything in the
way of the asbestos contractor, so that he only has to cut the bolts on the
boiler jacket bands, remove the lagging, clean up and leave. This includes
most all hardware in the cab, as there is asbestos on the backhead also.
The jacket sections should be saved, as patterns for cutting new ones from
paint-lock galvanized steel. Before removing anything, of course, it is
wise to take a bezillion detail photos and notes, so that everything can be
put back easily
later. There are three or four skilled locomotive restorers around the
country who will do all this also, but it is expensive.
