The Burlington had 2 distinct groups of trucks. One, as with all
RR's, were those company-owned assigned to Engineering (hi-rails,
straight & pick-ups) and to Materials/Stores. As for hauling wheel
sets - except for delivery from Griffin and other wheel mfgs, nearly
all wheels moved around by the Q were on MoW flat cars except for a
few on trucks in derailment service or rip track use to outlying
points. Two, the Q had its own trucking company. It began as an
outgrowth of the Q's bus line and ultimately became a free-standing
albeit wholly owned Q subisidiary with its own newsletter, calendars,
etc. New equipment was shown in the Q's Annual Reports, etc. The
Burlington (another FIRST!) was the only RR to have a truck line (the
part of the bus company) prior to passage of the Motor Carrier Act
in "35 or so & thus had special grandfathered rights. Check out
Overton's "Burlington Route" for in-depth info. Coverage of busses &
trucks has appeared in past BRHS publications - are you a BRHS mbr
yet? Also @ the Annual Meet next month the fellow from St. Charles,
IL who custom builds H.O. tractor trailers may very well be present -
has models of reefers, short, long, etc. See you @ Galesburg!
