For those who haven't seen the announcement, there are two new HO
scale diesels that will be of perticular interest to Q fans coming
out in 2005/06 from LifeLike in the Proto 2000 line!

The first is a Phase II U28B, which is also a Phase I U30B. This is
the half-height radiator version. LifeLike has announced they will
be doing the Phase I U30B in CB&Q! It will also be available DCC
ready, so I am not sure how many road numbers will be released.

Here's the rub: CB&Q bought a total of 20 U28B's, numbered 106-115
and 140-149. The 140-149 were upgraded to U30B's. So LifeLike is
correct in potentially releasing these as U30B's, but more
correctly, they are Phase II U28B's or U28Bm's. We need to try to
make sure LifeLike releases these with the proper numbers and
realizes that they were in fact ALL built as U28B's in late 1966 and
that only the 140 series was upgraded to U30B's with the only
visible external difference was that some of these (but apparently
not all) received a U30B builders plate. I for one am going to e-
mail LifeLike with this info, so they should have time to make sure
everything is correct. Additionally, I'm going to suggest they
release the locos in both the 106-115 series and the 140 series to
give us all more of a variety! I will am alos trying to determine
which units actually got the U30B plates, so I will pass that on as
well. If a bunch of us could "encourage" LifeLike in this direction,
or if anyone knows anyone at LifeLike, now is the time to act on
this. I for one am very excited to hear of this new release!

The second locomotive of interest to us Q fans is LifeLike's release
of an Alco RS27. Super sharp Alco for a CB&Q layout. What, you say?
Q didn't own Alco RS27's? Correct, but they did "run" Alco RS27's in
pool service from both the Union Pacific and the PRR!!There is a
shot in Mike Spoors CB&Q Volume 4 on page of a 48, shot in 1969, of
a train with a Q GP20 in the lead, followed by 3 UP GP9B's, and a UP
RS27. And there was a slide recently sold on eBay shot at Lincoln,
NE in October 1968 of PRR RS27 2414 with a Q U25B. As an Alco fan,
I'm definitely going to have an RS27 running on my layout. (Also,
don't forget interchange with the C&NW and GB&W, both who had RS27's
and interchanged with the Q). Who says the Q didn't run Alcos...
