I'm seeking help with the history of CB&Q class XA-14D boxcars numbered
46500-46749, which were built at Havelock in 1937 as auto cars with a single
end door, and reclassified as boxes at the beginning of 1941 at the same time
as the XA-14C's were reclassified.

Sometime between August 1943 and May 1945 (based on the October 1943 and July
1945 ORER's) 17 of the XA-14D's were renumbered into the new number series
17000-17211 and this increased to 28 cars by February 1946 (last number in the
series changed to 17213). However, by August of that year, all the cars were
back in the original number series, and the 17000 reference had disappeared.

The 17000 cars are listed as "steel underframe" - about the minimum
construction condition for this time - whilst cars in the original number
series were shown as "steel underframe, steel frame, staggered doors, one end
door". Was this to allow for a variety of cars to be put into this series?
Conversely, the dimensions of the end door are shown against the 17000 cars!

Does anyone on the List have an ORER for 1944, 1945 or 1946 who can check when
cars started being renumbered to the 17000 series, the number of cars
renumbered to the new group, and the last date those numbers were used?

There are several questions which arise from this.
Why renumber (and then back again)
Why allow for a potential total of 212 (or 214 cars in 1946)? There were
about 299 XA-14C/D at the time suggesting the intention was not to renumber all
of these cars, and there were too many other end-door cars (XP-1A, XA-13 and
XA-15B) to move them all to this number series
Why 17000's - the numbers hadn't been used for boxcars since 1910 and
apparently held no special significance other than availability

Any suggestions or information would be welcomed.

Thanks

Rupert
