There were several options for travel from Corning to STL in 1904. Travel
from Tarkio to Corning via rail would have been on the Chicago, Burlington &
Quincy (CB&Q). By 1904 the H&St.J. was a part of the CB&Q.

The only passenger train on the Tarkio Valley Branch departed Tarkio at 8:03
am AR Corning 8:45 am.
This train did go on to St. Joe and KC, arriving in St. Joe at 10:50 am and
KC at 4:10 pm.

If your family stayed on the CB&Q, they would have gone via St. Joseph and
Kansas City.
In 1904 the CB&Q had two routes between KC and STL, one via Hannibal and the
other via Mexico.

Through trains to STL via St. Joe, KC & Hannibal:
Daily Train #14 (Denver to STL train) DP Corning 2:02 am AR STL 6:50 pm
Daily Train #16 (Denver to STL train) DP Corning 7:34 pm AR STL 7:19 am

KC to STL trains via Mexico:
Daily DP Corning 2:02 am AR KC 7:10 am change trains to DP KC 10:00 am AR
STL 5:50 pm
Daily DP Corning 12:15 pm AR KC 4:10 pm change trains to DP KC 9:30 pm AR
STL 6:59 am

The non-CB&Q options would have been:
Travel north on the CB&Q to Coin and have taken the Wabash to STL via
Moberly.
Once in KC they could have taken trains to STL via the Alton; Missouri
Pacific (MOPAC); Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific (Rock Island); Missouri,
Kansas, Texas (KATY); or the Wabash.

Equipment, at leas on the CB&Q would have been all heavyweight cars and
non-air conditioned. The overnight trains would have had Pullman Sleepers
and dining cars available. The standard Pullman Sleeping car rates from St.
Joe to STL would have been an additional $2.00.

Hope this helps.
