Subject: CB&Q/UP runthrough operations

My name is Patrick Vana. I'm a railfan/model railroader doing research
on UP runthrough operations during the 1960-1988 time span. To my knowledge,
UP's first runthrough partner was CB&Q. I'm hoping someone in the BRHS can
help supply some information that I'm looking for in regards to the CB&Q/UP
runthrough operations.

The following is a list of sources I used in my own research covering
CB&Q/UP runthrough operations: Railfan Magazine April 1978 issue, UP Annual
1968-1977, the book UP Trackside by Lou Schmitz Morning Sun Publications,
video tapes- Chicago Odyssey Volume 1, UP Odyssey Volumes 1&2 by Green Frog,
Chicago Hot Spots by Neff Video, Sherman Hill by Video Rails, and Memories
of Burlington Diesels by Mark 1.
Here is the information I was able to collect: The CB&Q/UP runthrough
operations were started in April 1960. Symbols were CGI WB and GI-68 EB.
Originally, the routing for these trains was Chicago(Cicero Yard)-North
Platte. The western terminus was later extended to Cheyenne, then Salt Lake
City. Grand Island, Ne. was the interchange point between CB&Q and UP. A
railfan friend who works for UP recently told me that there is no longer an
interchange track between UP and BN at Grand Island! Motive power
contributed to the runthrough operations by CB&Q were the GP9, GP30, GP35,
and GP40 models from EMD and the U25B, U28B, and U30B models from GE. UP's
motive power contribution were the GP9, GP20, GP30, GP30B, and GP35 models
from EMD and the U25B model from GE. To my knowledge both railroads pooled
cabooses with each other. As far as I know, there was only one pair of
runthroughs. The CB&Q/UP runthroughs carried on after the BN merger took
place in March 1970.
I would like to inquire if you or anyone else in the BRHS has any
statistical data covering carload and tonnage density interchanged between
CB&Q and UP at any time during the 1960's at the Grand Island interchange?
This can be on a daily, weekly, monthly, or annual basis. Would you or
anyone else in the BRHS happen to know what schedules these runthrough
trains happened to run on? Any verification, correction, addition and
supplementing of any of the information I'm submitting and inquiring about
is appreciated. That's all for now.

Sincerely

Patrick Vana
