Perhaps a question to test the experts would have been to identify the
highest numbered car in "normal" revenue service (excluding, for example,
ore cars in beet service and other cars numbered in the company service
series (which started at 200000).
How about #199999?
This car appears in the 1915 ORER I'm currently working on. All the
dimensions (including IL 40', OL 41', IW 8' 6", IH 8', 2720 cu. ft.) are
identical with #130250 which was discussed last month. This was a "sample"
car built at Aurora shops in about 1914, probably as a predecessor to the
XM-21 cars which were built by Aurora, AC&F and Bettendorf. Needless to
say, #130250 does not appear in the 1915 listing under that number although
built the previous year, but had replaced #199999 in the list by 1919. It
was scrapped between 1932 and 1937.
I can't be more exact over the renumbering date or scapping date as I don't
have any ORER's between 1915 and 1919, or between 1932 and 1934. Can anyone
assist me with this?
As a comment though, it would have been logical to renumber the car prior to
the allocation of numbers (#130251-131250) to the XM-21's in 1915-16.
