You are right about if it's a train in a movie it has to be a steamer. In the movie Witness for the Prosecution there's a station scene. You don't actually see the train the star got off of, but the sound track has the sound of a steam engine accelerating as well as the actual sound of the C&NW diesel in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
