BNSF SD9 6234, built as C&S SD9 839 (b/n 25159, b/d 4/59, o/n 5589-9)
and delivered in the Burlington Route red/grey/white paint scheme,
has been donated by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway to the
Minnesota Transportation Museum, Inc. in St. Paul, MN. BNSF delivered
the 6234 to the museum's former Great Northern Railway Jackson Street
Roundhouse in St. Paul on October 16, 2003. The roundhouse is
adjacent to the BNSF Twin Cities Division Midway Sub. at Jackson St. ?
former Great Northern trackage.
BNSF 6234, a Phase IV SD9 (Phase IV SD9s are identified by a taller
battery box and have the GP9 style high short hood and cab which
produced a noticeable drop from the cab roof to the long hood), was
among the last 29 SD9s produced by EMD in 1959. C&S 831-842 b/d 4/59,
DM&IR 159-174 b/d 4-5/59, and Reserve Mining 1225 (the last SD9
built) b/d 6/59 were the last SD9s produced. The 6234 currently has
the BNSF reporting mark but never received its assigned BNSF number
of 6148, and is still painted BN "Cascade Green" and black with high
short hood. After almost forty-five years of service, the 6234 still
retains its as-built SD9 appearance with only a few minor changes:
the high MARS light on the locomotive front was removed, front and
rear pilot foot boards removed, ditch-lights added to the front and
rear walkway decks, and front and rear steps changed from four-steps
to five-steps. BN/BNSF upgrades include prime mover to 16-645EC (W.
Burlington, IA 12-16-98), traction motors to D78, and it has all new
wheel sets.
Thank you Burlington Northern Santa Fe.

Roundhouse and turntable, and for a roster of all our equipment.
