Jennifer,
>From the Ira J Bach/Susan Wolfson "A Guide to Chicago's Train Stations Past
and Present":
Designed by the engineering staff of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy
Railroad in 1899, this depot represents a radical change in the railroad's
approach
to depot design. Unlike earlier depots, such as that constructed at Congress
Park the year before which was of relatively light construction surrounded by
a protective canopy, this building has substantial masonry walls supporting a
heavy tiled roof with the canopies acting as wings projecting from either
side of the depot, as an integral part of the design.
Although the depot is practically devoid of references to a particular
historic style, its substantial character, precise fenestration, and its tiled
roof
convey a primarily classical impression. For the next three decades this
would set the pattern for the Burlington's more important commuter depots.
The building originally had two canopies. At present only the one between
the waiting room and the former baggage room serves its original function; the
other, at the opposite end, was absorbed into the depot as an enclosed
commercial area.
I also have the engineering elevation (Drawing number 9852) that shows the
following:
Foundation - Concrete
Exterior walls - Brick
Interior walls and ceiling - Plaster, oak wainscot
Floors - Waiting Room, Ticket Office, Toilets & Baggage Room - Maple (with a
penciled in "tile 1923 & 4" )
Date Built - 1898 Remodeled - 1924
Area - 2160 sq ft.
Ceiling Height - 14' 0"
As to your question on how to make a donation to the Society, you can make
out a check to BRHS and send it to:

Hope this helps! (West Hinsdale next?)
