This will cover May of "36 to May of "40 AND solves the mystery of seals on
some steam locos: 5323, 5338 & 5610 got seals - in 2 cases it's noted it was
by Rd Hse Foreman for lubricators. To keep wrong lubes from being added or
to see how long it went without lubing or ???
During the 4 year period, seals went on 37 CB&Q cars, 54 for other RR's &
their reefer subsidiaries and 8 private owners. Unique CB&Q included
#111535, a 40' box of Co. Matl's to Denver Shops, 118975 taking lumber to
Havelock shops, another load of company lumber in 104311 (no destination
shown) and 98178, a 41' box carrying something from a treatment plan, ditto
for 97989 & 40' #16694. (Among the foreign roads is a KCS box taking
something from Nat. Lbr & Creosote Co, apparently located in Ottumwa - was
this the source of the goods in the 3 Q box cars as well - is it still in
Ottumwa?). Q 26108 was taking mdse from Clarinda to Victorville, Quebec;
16369 was hauling sacks of feed & 97869 was hauling soybeans that were
leaking. (an age-old problem) There were no C&S cars but a FtW&D 40' box
#6297 was sealed. A number of the Q cars are listed as going to or from
Otto (a company in Des Moines?) and Swanson Food Stores as well as a
Hale-Strong Co. Several Q cars had to be resealed as they were opened to
see if they were empty (no waybill?) and 2 auto boxes apparently were to be
sealed as emptys (special loading that required they have dirt & dust kept
out?).
Foreign roads were: PRR 5*; Milw & B&O 4 ea; NP, IC & C&NW 3 ea; MP 2
including a load of bagged lime; Reading 2 (both pig lead) and 1 from each
of the following: NYC, Erie, Missouri-Illinois, CRI&P, SP, SL-SF, AT&SF,
GTW. Int. Great Northern stock (going to Swift), L&N, ITC (lime going to
Maxon, IA), UP (50' auto box loaded w/furniture), Wab, Michigan Central
(wool interchanged from CRI&P going to Des Moines - why not routed direct on
the Rock?), KCS (that Lbr/Creosote Co.) and CGW (roofing material going from
Bussey to Knoxville). And for Archie Hayden, Hannibal Connecting #960 with
bags of cement! There were also 3 Fruit Growers Express (one loaded @
Albia), 2 Western Fruit Express reefers, 2 PFE's, a SFRD (Santa Fe), a NRX
(Northern Pacific) & a Northwestern Refrig Lines loaded with spuds and an
ART reefer.
*One of the PRR box cars was resealed as had to inspected after it was noted
it had been broken into through the floor - a car inspector was really doing
his job!
Private owners included 4 Morrells (one coming FROM Peoria), an Armour,
Swift & National reefers & a St. Louis Refrig Express (Budweiser to
Creston),
This time I have but one mystery reporting mark - 4 cars marked CRLX
including 2 stating they are loaded with meat going to Hale-Strong (a
wholesaler in Iowa I believe). Next time the War years!
