Hello, Gerald and Jan and BRHS - The "derelict factory" at Louisiana, MO., may
be the old button factory. Once upon a time Louisiana turned out "MOther of
Pearl" shirt buttons made from shells dredged out of the river. In MODEL
RAILROADER mag in the late '50s-early '60s there was an article describing the
modeling possibilities of this area, and I'm pretty sure this factory was
featured. Old timers (hello, Gerald) would call the line that crosses the Q
there the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio. Until the early '50s Hannibal, Mo., had a
full-fledged steam locomotive backshop that occupied much of the space below
Lovers Leap. The buildings stood vacant for another decade or so until the RR
tore absolutely everything down in that area. At Quincy, IL., the BNSF is in
evidence along the riverfront. The stone shop building from the 1850s is being
used by a feed company. The stone roundhouse fell victim to a sewer project.
Facilitie! s at West Quincy, MO., were wiped out in the 1993 flood and never
replaced. Jan, figure on a good long day at Quincy. Larry can show you around.
