Alan,
Don got it right about the E5. Truly worth the trip to Union to see it and
the Nebraska Zephyr in operation. Talk about time travel.
The Q never owned any Alco road power, although that hasn't kept some model
manufacturers from painting Alco motors in the Q scheme!
The Q rostered 9 Alco S2s (9300-9308), built in 1942 and 30 Baldwin VO1000s
(9350-9379) built in 1943-1944. If I recall correctly, these were allocated
to the Q by the war production board during WWII and weren't the first
choice of the Motive Power department.
The first GEs on the property were U25Bs 100-105 arriving in 1964.
Regards from San Diego,
John Lewis

Subject: [BRHSlist] CB&Q EMD E5 Preservation, and CB&Q Alcos?
Date: Fri, 18 Apr 2003 14:25:24 -0300
Dear Group,
I recall reading that one CB&Q E5 was preserved. Where is it located?
Is it operable, or "shell only"? Are there any others around?
Based on my scant knowledge of the CB&Q, it was pretty much an EMD-only
road until an order of GEs (U25Bs?) arrived in the 1960s... and I'm only
aware of the GEs because they sometimes operated through to Croxton /
Jersey City on the Erie Lackawanna.
I don't recall ever seeing an Alco road locomotive in CB&Q paint. Were
there any? What about switchers?
Cheers,
Alan Samostie
