Hi Gang,
Proto 2000 has just released their 'new' re-tooled E-8/9 A & B units with
corrected nose contour (and other improvements). The locomotives are a big
improvement over the earlier E-8/9's (which weren't bad) and now resemble
the Highliner & InterMountain 'F' unit 'Bulldog' noses. I plan to paint
several of the E-8/9 'A' units in CB&Q and want to simulate the stainless
steel side panels with Alclad II Stainless Steel lacquer paint that I just
acquired. My distributor friend told me that guys building aircraft models
use this paint and have had excellent results simulating stainless steel.
The Alclad paint is a non-buffing paint and come pre-thinned for
airbrushing. The directions say to paint the surface of the model with a
Gloss Black enamel, let dry, and then apply 2 light coats of Stainless Steel
over the top at 12-15psi. Has anyone had experience with airbrushing Alclad
II in this application? Or am I going into unchartered waters here! I think
I will airbrush some scrap pieces of sheet styrene first, for practice, so I
don't screw-up a perfectly good locomotive. Any help on this matter would be
appreciated- Thanks,
John Olson
