Do the lists show where the coal originated?
The notation of National Sheet metal is probably correct but there was a Div
of this company in Aurora called National Metal Wares. It was located off the
West Batavia line near Illinois Ave. I had an Uncle who worked there 40 plus
years and one day he mentioned that they used to ship cars of metal pipe from
Aurora to LaSalle but went to trucking due to the eratic delivery. He
commented that they could have the pipe in the LaSalle plant in a couple hrs
by truck but never knew for sure when it would get there by rail and 7 days
was not uncommon.
I would offer that as a prime example of how all the business departed the
rails.
Funny,in reading the customer complaints in the current rail industry trade
publications the complaint is still the same,one shipment arrives in 4 days
the next one takes a week. No consistency of service.
