Based on files of 'tour' groups traveling on the Q in 1963, here is some
consist info. On Feb. 3 the Chicago Outing Club had an 'outing' for 31
members on Train #24, the Chicago-bound Afternoon Zephyr - it ran 2 (TWO!)
sections that day with the Club eating in Diner #199 on the 2nd section.
On Apr 24-27 the Thornton Township H.S. band took a r/t on the DZ to
Denver, leaving on #1 @ 5 pm on the 24th with dinner on Diner #202 (S.
Tureen). They had breakfast in diner 202 and in dorm-coffee shop 254 (S.
Kettle) on the 25th. Coming back on #10 on the 26th (Lv. Denver @ 4 pm),
they had breakfast on the 27th in diner #196 (S. Salver). Dorm-coffee shop
#253 (S. Cup) was also in the W-bd consist as pillow rentals (25 cents ea)
were charged to dorm coffee shops rather than coaches, at least on this
tour. Speaking of the coaches, E-bd they had 3 assigned to them (band
totaled 139 personnel); DZ-31, 32 & 33 - W-bd. they were DZ-#2, 33 & 36.
It's also noted that there will be a few left over coach seats which were be
used to store instruments. So its safe to say the DZ had extra coaches on
this R/T. They were also to be provided 6 lap boards coming & going (Q-
never saw a Burlington lapboard except in suburban service in my years of
travel - what did they look like?). Gerald Edgar
