Robert, There are several things that can make an Athearn locomotive noisey.
(1) Gear noise is usuallu caused by plastic imperfections such as flash or
something in the gear teeth. Disassemble the truck remove all lubrication
and inspect all the gears using a magnifing glass. After reassembly use
Pearl Drops tooth paste in the gears which is an abrasive and will make the
gears mate to each other. Run the engine on the bench both directions for an
hour or two then remove all traces of the abrasive and re-lubricate using a
good plastic compatable grease for the gears and a plastic compatable light
oil for the bearings. (2) some times the flywheels are not bored exactly
true and this will cause vibration. Try to rotate one flywheel in relation
to the other a small amount at a time. Good luck Bob Schafer

I'm sure this has been addressed in the past, but as a
newbe in the group it's something that bugs me -
that's the grinding noise in the athearn drive train.
Is there a simple solution? If so, suggestions please.
Tnx, Robert.
