Tim,

Roof hatch cars were used for many things. The Southern had a large
fleet for clay loading. BN had cars for coke, soda ash, feed, hides,
& foundry sand.

CB&Q cars with unspecified roof hatches included:
30387,31103,31228,31349,32082,32623,32928,33582,34423,37321.
and 60079,60123,60393,60626,60811,61009,61791.
and 25541,25801,26113,26161,26448,26675,28082,28398,28440.
also 21200. There was also a GN 50' roof hatch sand car, 21975
which was built as 39158.

By the early 80's there were probably hundreds of 40' ice reefers
with roof hatches. The old ice hatches were usually welded shut
when the ice bunkers were removed for grain loading. They were
not in the right places on the roof. They went with much smaller
holes with plywood covers.
