Okay, I know that it's not the correct Mikado version - and that the
domes aren't quite right - and that the lettering isn't precisely
correct - and that the tender isn't exactly a match for the Q - BUT -
while in my local hobby shop, after passing on the new Athearn 2-8-2
steamer, I ran into a fellow BRHS member who had nothing but praise
for his and highly recommended it. I then talked to a second modeler
who liked his first Athearn steamer so well that he now has four and
is retiring his brass.
SO - they won me over. I'm now looking into what to do to modify the
Athearn unit that I now own.
Most of the work I can handle without much difficulty - but - has
anyone come up with an easier front coupler change other than sawing
and cutting a pocket for a Kadee draft box? I've done that before
(on IHC steamers), but am reluctant to start carving on the Athearn
pilot if there is any other way.
Suggestions?
