The Black Hills Central is a steam powered excursion line that runs
several times a day between Hill City and Keystone. That's not in the
immediate Deadwood area, but it's not too far away. The railroad is a
remnant of the network of track the CB&Q once had in the Black Hills.
This season the Black Hills Central has added a Mallet locomotive to
their roster. I saw it in action last month. A very nice looking
locomotive. Its ancestry is from the western logging lines and not CB&Q.
A new 'depot styled' ticket office and gift shop is open in Keystone.
Trains now run all the way to this depot on a section of track that was
reinstalled after a flash flood wiped out a section several years ago.
Round trip fare to ride the train is $18. Plan ahead, since the train
sells out.
