Thanks for the kind words on the layout. I used High Ball HO "Light
Gray" ballast for the mainline and High Ball N scale "cinders" in the
yards and spurs. When we looked at numerous photos of the 1950s, a
number of us were very comfortable using these colors. To ensure that I
had enough for the project, I bought enough for the entire railroad which
I estimated to be about 25 bags. I wanted to make sure that I had a
consistent color and thought that buying all at one time would ebsure
this. I was concerend about variations in colors if I bought them over a
period of years.
