Paul: Here is a quick answer. A Division was managed by the Superintendent. Under that person were Trainmasters, Asst. TM, Roadmasters, Div. Engineer (Civil Type), Road Foremen of Engines, etc. A TM or ATM would have a "Territory", road or terminal, that was defined by the Supt. Look at an employee timetable for the list of officers. That should give you some idea of the number of supervisors. Generally , road territory was made up of a goodly size of turf including mainline and many branches. BTW, in the electric utility business, the tree trimming foreman WAS the branch manager.... Ed DeRouin |
