Yes there were 50mph crossover speeds, for "diesel powered trains
with Electro-pneumatic straight air brakes". All other trains were
40mph. This information is from LaCrosse Division TTs; #55, 9/28/47
and #69, 4/25/54. The specific locations: end of double track at
Crawford, Ports, LaCrosse, Trevino and Mears; and crossovers at
Herrington and Sullivan. These turnouts were all #24. If I remember
correctly, all the turnouts on the East End were also #24s with the
exception of those East of Cicero and some around Eola.
So 50mph crossovers are really nothing new.
