Leo,
They used to have a switch tender at both ends of the yard when I fired
Dinkies.
Ralph was the tender on the East end in the morning and would line
everyone up into the yard. Sam was the tender next to Crooks Terminal and
would line the switches for movement in and out of the Zephyr Pit.
Sam lined the switches at this location thru out the day and finished
when the hostlers would take the last of the E's to the yard for the evening
rush.
Ralph would line the Dinkies back into Union Station for the night parade
and when the last one was lined up would go home. If I'm not mistaken they
were both 12 hr jobs 5 days a week. The Suburban crews would line their own
switches into the yard on the weekends.
