As a life long resident of this city, there is not much to see railfan wise
due to all the mega mergers. But, there are several good railfan spots to
watch trains. I do not recommend that you go to these places without an
escort, mainly someone who has lived in this city for at least 30 years. As
these spots can be quiet dangerous at times. As far as Gratiot Street tower
is concerned they tore it down about 4 or 5 years ago. Trying to take
pictures at the old spot is not a good idea as the railroad police patrol
that frequently and railfans are unwelcome. There are only two good hobby
shops in St. Louis, Henzes Hobbies and Tinker Town. The rest are not worth
even going to. If you would like a tour of American Model Builders, you will
need to contact me in advance, as we do not normally give tours to the
general public.
