Initally these were delivered as four unit sets, drawbarred together to be
one 'motor'. Only the end units were marked visibly with their number, but
no letter suffix was applied. The booster units had nearly invisible 1"
road numbers. A little bit later in life the letter suffixes were added and
the boosters got visible numbers. As time when on the four unit sets were
broken into two unit sets so you might see 116 A and B, or 116 C and D in
use. I'm not certain, but I believe near the end of the f-units existence,
they were separated to the point that individual units could be used as
needed.
