Ed:
Here's a little bit:
Let's stick to the days before two way deliveries and the RR's trading
off who would handle the transfers.
ATSF To: None. BRC would handle.
ATSF From: Freight houses at Corwith did load some traffic for Billings
Shipping. Would transfer from Corwith via BRC/C&WI to Cicero
about 0900. Would commonly load in SFRD reefers.
Forwarder traffic only. Everything else BRC would handle.
BOCT To: Via Western Ave. to Barr Yard. No Autos via this route.
From: Reverse of above, still no Autos. Also Delivered industry
business generated in the McCook area at Congress Park.
BRC To: Via BRC/C&WI to the West end of Clearing.
From: Same crew would pull, also from West end.
CA&E To: Direct at North Aurora or B&OCT would handle.
From: Reverse of above.
C&EI To: BRC would handle.
From: BRC would handle.
CGW To: BRC handled.
From: BRC or B&OCT handled. (Chicago Transfer was a B&OCT yard).
C&IW To: Wobblies direct just South of 26th St. Some traffic via
IHB.
From: Direct just South of 26th St.
C&NW To: Wood St. business via Union Ave. Usually no other traffic.
Grain for Irondale had to go IHB.
From: Usually nothing. For a while CB&Q & C&NW were delivering
to each other via Union Ave. and they would come all the
way out to Cicero. This did not last very long. C&NW
would use either the BRC or IHB to move their traffic to
the CB&Q.
(Later agreement made all Chicago interchange both ways
go via West Chicago but I think that it was after BN
merger. C&NW could never seem to make up their mind.)
C&O To: Via BRC/C&WI to Rockwell St. Yard, (Leased from BRC),
no Autos. Think this was the old PM facility. Main
C&O yard was at Burnham. A bit hazy there.
From: They would come to Cicero the same way, no Autos.
Road power very rare.
CI&L To: BRC would handle Monon traffic.
From: BRC would handle Monon traffic.
CJ: To: Direct to Ashland Ave. Yard via Western Ave. CR&I included.
From: I don't remember.
CNSM To: Road haul, probably via EJ&E.
From: Same as above.
CPT To: Direct via Western Ave. I do not remember whether they
used the CJ, BOCT, or PRR. Probably the CJ.
From: Not applicable. They had no locomotives.
CRIP To: BRC would handle.
From: BRC would handle.
CSL To: BRC or IHB would handle.
From: BRC or IHB would handle.
CSSB To: BRC or IHB would handle.
From: BRC or IHB would handle.
CWPS To: IHB or BRC would handle.
From: IHB or BRC would handle.
EJ&E To: Eola except Chicago Switching District traffic via the IHB
at The Lakefront. South Chicago traffic via BRC.
From: Reverse of above. (The Chicago Switching District ended
on the EAST side of the EJ&E pretty much all around Chicago.)
EL To: Via BRC/C&WI to 47th Street. Generally just a run thru to
Marion/Brier Hill/Meadville? Don't know where they switched
it. This delivery was the reason they wanted to pool power.
From: Reverse of the above. Came over with road power.
GM&O To: BRC would handle. Unit coal loads via BRC/C&WI direct to
Glenn Yard.
From: BRC would handle. Unit coal empties also direct but I do
not remember where crew change took place.
Note: B&O used Glenn until about 1944. Might have been B&O
Interchange there but this is going way back.
GTW To: Via BRC/C&WI to Hayford, then North to Elsdon.
From: Reverse of the above. Road power very rare.
IC To: BRC would handle.
From: BRC or IHB would handle.
IHB To: Direct at Congress Park.
From: Direct at Congress Park. I was told that when the IHB still
had shippers in the stockyards that they would come up the CJ
to Western Ave. also. Long before my time.
IN To: Direct via Western Ave. Think a Western Ave. yard engine would
handle.
From: Direct to Cicero via Western Ave.
MILW To: BRC or IHB handled.
From: IHB handled.
MJ To: Direct just South of 26th St.
From: Direct just South of 26th St.
Note: Before intersection of Cicero Ave. and Ogden Ave. was rebuilt
as part of the Main Line relocation project that created the
new Cicero Yard the track that went to the lumber yard East
of House #9 went over Cicero Ave. and connected with the MJ
right by their roundhouse. The MJ could get to the Interchange
South of 26th St. without using the BRC. They had their own
bridge just West of the Belt Bridge.
NKP To: Direct to Calumet Yard via BRC/C&WI and Pullman Jct. A long
trip.
From: Reverse of the above. No road power.
NYC To: Direct to Englewood via Union Ave. Wanted Elkharts and Selkirks
blocked. All Perishable via IHB. NYC would have liked to get
Big Four, (CCC&STL) traffic via IHB but CB&Q did not care.
From: From Englewood via Union Ave. Road power common but not always.
For a while were coming to us with re-engined Lima's.
Big Four traffic via IHB. All traffic from Burns Harbor &
Portage steel mills via IHB.
PRR To: Direct to 55th St. via Union Ave. Wanted it pre-blocked for
Conway. This was the run-thru traffic.
Direct to 59th St. via Western Ave. Just Panhandle and Misc.
traffic and no Autos.
From: Reverse of the above. Until the run-thru no road power.
Road power would only come from 55th St. No Autos from
59th St.
SOO To: BRC handled.
From: BRC or IHB handled.
WAB To: Direct to Landers via BRC/C&WI.
From: Reverse of above, no road power.
Just off the top of my head and comments are requested.
