I firmly believe that the Q's steam engines, at least some of them, had red roofs prior to WWII. Recently Locomotive Quarterly profiled Q O5s. Even though they were all black and white photos several clearly (in my opinion) showed a lighter colored roof than the boiler or side of the cab. 1947 has been bandied around as being the beginning of the red roof.
