To add to what Karl has already written. My signal file is about an
inch thick. Ed is working on a signal piece for the Bulletin. When
it
will be finished is a good question. As Both Ed and I have been
reseaching for a couple years. If you ran a copy of the accident
file
for Western Springs you got a good idea of the first signaling on
the
East End(Aurora to Chicago)Manual Block with green semphore blades
Installed in 1889. This was then made Auto Matic just after this
accident in 1914. Some Automatic Train Stop was also installed
starting
in 1908. Most Signaling has been the result of government mandates
as
well. In 1912 112 miles of Absolute Permissive Block was installed
Akron to Denver to finish the APB between Chicago to Denver started
in
1907. This was a GRS Lock and Block System. Most at the time was
lower
quad Semophore. The Bridges the Q used were published in "The
Signal
Engineer" Oct 1912. "Railway Signal Engineer" Aug 1923 talks about
two
and three light color light signals installed between Hannibal and
Louisiana and again using APB. By 1925 remote installations were
being
put in service Earlville, Mendota, Crawford(Wisc)Illinois Jct(East
of
Miss River Bridge). In 1926 East End changed from Lower Quad to
Triangular Light Signals. Semaphores sent to Shop are rebuilt for
use
on the Ottumwa Div. The Q was the first RR to use the APB system of
operations. The Remote Installations lead to CTC. I can not find
when
the Triangle lights were replaced on the East End. A lot of the new
installations are the HOODed style UP uses. Redo of Cicero to Union
Ave. and the Bidirectional signals going in on the Ottumwa Div.
The
neat thing is that once the Q signaled an area it did away with
running
orders. Now Track Warrents have all but superseded the Signals.
You
have to have a warrent to occupy the track in automatic current of
traffic (old Rule 251 territory)
