Subject: RITS: Bell Ave. Yard

I just received a copy of a letter from a solid source (the horse's mouth)
regarding this whole Bell Ave. Yard rumor/dead rumor/on rumor. It follows:

"Fort Worth, Texas
March 1,2000

Name Deleted,

BNSF will be abandoning 0.83 mile of trackage in Des Moines, Iowa generally
west of the Des Moines River to make way for a state highway project. BNSF
will receive $900,000 for the property in this corridor and Ethel Allen
Steele is handling this transaction. The abandonment will start at Milepost
67.38 and end at Milepost 0.40. There is an equation at Milepost
68.20=Milepost 0.39.

BNSF will also transfer 1.05 miles of trackage in Des Moines in a separate
transaction to the Union Pacific including the bridge over the Raccoon
River.
This sale starts at Milepost 0.40 (adjacent to the abandonment portion
mentioned above) and goes to Milepost 1.45 where it connects with UP in
their
Bell yard. The Iowa Interstate has trackage rights or joint use rights over
part of the trackage to be transferred to UP in order to serve PDM Steel.
IAIS will continue to serve PDM Steel following the transfer of the trackage
to UP.

BNSF will receive trackage at Orin, Wyoming in return for the Des Moines
trackage and other considerations.

The sale to the UP should take place early in the 2nd quarter. The
abandonment and subsequent transfer of the property for the highway project
will probably take place late this year.

Name Deleted"

Two maps were included showing the trackage in question. I hope this clears
up the debate and rumors. It seems the UP employee first mentioned, was
right!!
