Leo - IF I remember correctly, rarer as the years wear on....., wasn't there a Bulletin article a couple of years ago about storage mail cars that had rider compartments on one end?  The article was illustrated with photos of the rider compartments.  I think that the article had something to do with the Q's Fast Mail that operated between Omaha and CUS.  This particular article may be of interest to Scott.  Thanks - Louis

Scott,

All Express trains were pretty much limited to the silk trains that were pretty much gone by the 1920s. The other express trains were the berry specials. I worked with crews in the 1970s who had worked those and would enjoy talking about the speeds they operated at and the special train orders stating something to the effect “make best time possible”. That’s not the exact wording, there are others on the list that can provide that exact verbiage.

Whether the train was truly an all express or the more common mail and express train or a solid mail train at Christmas time there was a rider car for the train crew. This car could vary from a coach tacked on to specific combines or cars that had seats for this specific reason. The rider may or may not be at the end of the train.
To my knowledge waycars were not used as they were not designed to run at the speeds set by these trains. Again i worked with many men in the 1970s who talked those mail trains.
