Darrall, Those cars were initially classified as XA-16's and were used in Automobile service. They started taking out the car loaders in 1955 and by 1962 the entire class was modified and renumbered into 9000-9499 general service. According to the Railway Prototype Cyclopedia 13 - "They served throughout most of the 1960's in general revenue service, but retirement for most came late in the decade and only a handful survived to the 1971 Burlington Northern merger in revenue service." Should you decide not to use this, I'd be very interested in buying it (I model 1950) or perhaps trading for something that survived into the merger (XM-32?) This past weekend and on a whim, I picked a Sunshine Resin Kit for a CB&Q 40' double door boxcar at a train show hoping that it may fit into my August-September 1979 timeframe. CB&Q 39000-39499 (some cars were moved over into the 9000's at some point) were built in 1946. However, it appears the series never made it to the BN merger. So was this series rebuilt by the CB&Q? Scrapped by the CB&Q? Or sold to another railroad? The cars would have have been approx. 24 years old at the time of the merger and I find it odd that I can find no evidence of them on BN's roster.
