BRHS's Burlington Bulletin No-45 is title "Modern Americans".
The first article covers CB&Q's A-2 & A-6 class 4-4-0 American style steam locomotives and was written By Hol Wagner.
The second article (by Pete Hegpeth) covers the RPL&N's (Rock Port Langdon & Northern) #440, which was a former CB&Q 4-4-0 American style steam locomotive.
Pages 88 & 89 have black &white photos of RPL&N #440 decorated as CB&Q #440 in October 1940 at Aurora IL. I have the following questions o the color scheme in these photos:
1. What color was the wooden cowcatcher pilot ?
2. What color was the headlight box ?
3. Was the "440" number plate on the nose black with brass lettering ?
4. The smoke box appears to be silver-gray. Is this correct ?
5. The main body of the boiler appears to be a dark color. Was this black or a different dark color ?
6. The cab appears to be a dark color. Was this black or another color ? Was it the same color as the boiler ?
7. The Cab roof is not very visible in these photos. Would the cab roof have been red or the same color as the cab sides ?
8. Was the light-colored lettering on the cab white, yellow, or gold ?
9. The locomotive has light colored highlighting along the running boards, steam chests, drive rods, & cab. Was this light color white, silver, yellow, or gold ?
10. Were the pilot wheels & drive wheels black or another dark color ?
11. Were the sand dome & steam dome also painted the same color as the main boiler of in brass finish ?
12. Was the diamond smoke stack black ?
13. The tender appears to be a dark color. Was it black ?
14. The BR herald on the tender appears to be black & white, is this correct ? Was the herald black, red, & white ? Or was the herald black, red, & gold ?
Thanks in advance for any inputs that you can provide.
A local hobby shop owner is considering a custom run of a scale CB&Q 4-4-0 in 3-rail O-gauge. He is considering a CB&Q #440 based on the black & white photos in BB-45. He is asking questions about the color scheme of the locomotive in these photos.
