When I was modeling in HO, I dived into converting some of the brass Nickel Plate Products brass CB&Q K-2 4-6-0's into distinctive models, intending to use them as the foundation of a roster for a layout featuring the Q's former Keokuk & Western line from Keokuk to Centerville, IA. I re-motored/re-geared these models with 12x24 Mashima can motor (needed something really small to fit in that narrow firebox!) and NWSL 36-1 idler gearbox so that they would be quiet, reliable and perform well with DCC. Of equal significance, I also changed details to represent specific engines based on photographs. I completed one of the models before I exited HO, and sold it to a fortunate modeler on ebay some 15 years ago.

I have two more engines that have been languishing among my unfinished projects in the interim. These are the more interesting of the engines because both have replacement tenders along with other detail modifications. One (CB&Q #666) has a low switcher tender (Oriental Limited G-8 switcher donor) as did the prototype (See attached photo). The other (CB&Q #638) has a modified GN tender (Overland GN E-15 donor) with rounded coal boards (coal bunker has been shortened) as were prominent on smaller CB&Q and GN motive power (Photo attached).

I suspect that among this group there is a fellow prototype modeler who can see the potential in these models and might have an interest. Unfortunately, both still need some work, and my aging hands and eyes make it a challenge to do such things in HO now.

Here's what I have:

  • CB&Q #666 has been re-detailed for the prototype (fabricated mount for steam generator, steam generator muffler, bell moved, new check valves, add sand dome hatch, etc.) and custom painted with Scalecoat I and lettered (though the engine only does not have a matte finish yet). In my opinion turned out really well. I also made a removable coal load for its tender. The new NWSL drive gear has been mounted on the axle, and the driver re-quartered. It still needs a torque arm/cage mount built that isolates the motor from the frame (isolation only needed if the modeler uses DCC) along with wiring and final assembly. The original assembly hardware for the model is included, as is the original open-frame motor and gearbox assembly. This model is close to being completed. Included are the remainders of the Microscale CB&Q steam decals used, along with original box, foam and display plate from Nickel Plate Products. Asking price is $365.

  • CB&Q #638 needs the replacement pilot attached and tender detailing finished along with motor mounting, wiring, paint and final assembly. Most engine re-detailing complete. Key detail parts for the remaining tender work (e.g. Cuckoo clock light and large tender filler casting) are included. The new NWSL gear has been mounted on the drive axle, and the driver re-quartered. The original assembly hardware for the model is included, as is the original open-frame motor and gearbox assembly. Included are a complete set of Microscale CB&Q steam decals, along with the original box, foam and display plate from Nickel Plate Products. Asking price is $250.

Each of these would be a one-of-a-kind model when complete. If you are interested in augmenting your roster with some unique small HO Burlington steam power that has been significantly enhanced, these projects would be the ticket. If you'd like both models, I'll offer them together for $560.

I also have another Mashima 1224 motor and the NWSL 165-6 1.5mm Conversion kit, which includes worm, bushings and washer components that are required to convert NWSL gear boxes to by mounting the worm to the motor shaft. These are the components I used for the re-motoring of the K-2 models. I also have a NWSL 136-6 double idler gearbox, 28-1 ratio which fits a 3mm axle though is a different ratio than on the other models, but similar in other respects. These motors and parts are much less available than they once were, so are very desirable for guys doing their own work.  Each is as-new in the original package. $85 for this lot of components.

Finally, I have an additional Overland Models GN brass E-15 tender with coal bunker shortened in an identical fashion as the #638 tender. Other details still to be completed, key detail castings included. No original box. $95.

Additional photographs available upon request. Buyer to pay actual shipping. Reasonable offers will be considered. Payment by PayPal Friends & Family, Apple Cash, Zelle, Check or Money Order accepted. Electronic payment preferred.
