Rob,
I know CB&Q power came through NYC's Sharonville yard here in Cincinnati. I never saw it myself (I was only 10 at BN merger time) but I have seen slides from Don and Dan Dover of Q power here in Cincinnati. Dan Finfrock, a well known photographer here mentioned that the first time he saw CB&Q power was at Sharonville - a CB&Q U25B leading a train into the yard. So I know that CB&Q power did lead NYC trains, at least in this part of the territory.
I also have a spreadsheet in the files section of CB&Q trains on the line from Chicago to Mpls-StP. Confirmed NYC power includes GP40's (DB and non-DB), U25B, and U30B (Phase I with the half-height radiators - same as the U28B Phase II and produced in HO by Proto 2000). In photos the NYC U25B's are by far the most common NYC power.
While I don't have the references right at hand, NYC RS-32's also showed up on the Q. I bought an Atlas Trainman NYC RS-32 because I found photo evidence of one in Denver, and I believe there was at least one other photo reference of an NYC RS-32 on the Q. I have a weakness for oddball power that I have confirmed running on the Q. Alco RS-27's (UP, PRR), RS-32's (NYC), C-424 and C-425 (EL, PRR), and C-630's (UP); GE U28C Phase II (UP) and U50 (UP); EL GP35's, SD45's, U33/36C's, SDP45's. UP GP9B's, GP30B's, and SD24B's. If you model the Q it is really amazing how many different odd locomotive models you can add to your roster based on pool power!
As to Blackbirds, I would say if you want to model one it would most likely be an SD7 or SD9. The GP7's and GP9's were mostly used for switching and wayfreights. That's not to say they weren't ever used on line haul, they definitely were, but I'm not sure that would be preferred power for a pool train. As you go through CB&Q or NYC photos just keep looking.
