Rick,

It doesn’t appear that anyone has responded to your original post. The photo that you posted is already in both the BRHS Flickr collection and the new BRHS Photo Gallery that will appear April 1, 2024. Both sites are available only to BRHS members. Go to burlingtonroute.org to join if you are not already a member. The gentleman at the far right in the photo is identified as Ernest Johnson in our copy of the photo. Was that you maternal grandfather’s name? The photo that we have posted was located by one of the BRHS members in an internet search.

The turntable(s) that you referenced were located adjacent to the “T” intersection of Oakwood and Warren Ave. Over time, there were two different turntables located there, the second larger than the first and located just west of the first turntable at the location. The second turntable was installed in 1936 and was relocated from Creston, IA. I am not certain of the date that the first turntable was installed there. There was also a sizable wooden water tank there located immediately adjacent to the sidewalk along Warren Ave. with a standpipe located adjacent to the turntable lead for filling locomotive tenders. Attached is a photo that my dad took during the construction and installation of the second turntable at the Oakwood Street location.

I believe that neither of those turntables is the one shown in your photo. The first turntable in Downers Grove was installed much earlier and was located just west of Forest Avenue and just south the main line, much closer to downtown Downers Grove. It was a small table as depicted in your photo. Of course, the locomotives used by the railroad were smaller in those days. As indicated by you and Hol Wagner, the date of the photo is probably around 1900. The H1, H2 and H3 2-6-0 moguls were all built in 1898. If you have any other questions, please ask. BTW, I grew up about 3 blocks west of the Oakwood turntable location and remember seeing some steam locomotives being turned and serviced there.
