Rich -
I am modeling the transition period of late 40s and early 50s, when first generation diesels arrived, but most steam was still available.  In particular, I am modeling the first years of the CZ.  I have models of that period, but I would like to do the Exposition Flyer, before the CZ began in 1949.  This covers mostly the 1940s.  Q and WP used mostly the Pullman green cars, but D&RGW also used the "stream-styled" rebuilt HW cars, black with gold striping.   I have several Q S-4s and O-5s to use for power, but I also have the original Q F3s - 9960-9962.  I believe during this period, Q used diesel power on Zephyrs and kept steam on other trains.  For the peak of the transition period, I use the year 1950.  I have used Railway Classic decals for CZ because the space between baggage doors was too short for Microscale CZ decals.

John,

As always, it depends.  What year(s) are you trying to model?  Q's version of the heavyweight Railroad Roman lettering was gold leaf, but after some point (late 30's early 40's?) they started using an imitation gold - similar to Dulux gold.  In 1948/49 they initially started to use the ribbon-style lettering in imitation gold on the rebuilt Suburban HW Coaches and power cars.  It eventually was used on repaints and rebuilds of HW cars.  For a period, you can see a mix of RR Roman and ribbon-style lettering.  Some never got the new lettering.

A further note - the Q did not use "Burlington" on the letterboard of the HW sleepers.  Those stayed "Pullman" until withdrawn from lease, and then were just painted over, leaving  no letterboard name.

K4 Decals makes what they call Bronze Gold HW decals. https://k4decals.com/products/burlington-cb-q-heavyweight-passenger-car-bronze-gold-roman-lettering-decal-cbqrp?_pos=16&_sid=5c6ea0c41&_ss=r   My biggest beef is there are only two letterboard lengths, which do not cover the gamete of lettering spacing. There are numerous producers of the ribbon-style decals, including Micro Scale.

I'd love to hear from anyone who definitively knows when the gold was replaced by the imitation gold.

I have several Branchline unlettered heavyweight kits and a Walthers heavyweight baggage-RPO - all painted in Pullman green, which I need to letter for Q.  What is the best decal for CB&Q heavyweights?  I believe it is gold in a stylized font.  I need decals which are accurate and easy to get.  What is the most accurate decal for Q heavyweights in Pullman green?
