[CBQ] Burlington Route in Sugar Grove IL, Library Presentation April 6th at 2P

The Burlington Route Historical Society will be making a presentation on the 
history of the railroad in Sugar Grove,IL on Saturday April 6th at 2PM in the 
Sugar Grove library 
125 S. Municipal Dr., Sugar Grove,IL. The presentation is at the request and 
sponsorship of the Sugar Grove historical society. All are welcome to attend.

In addition to the history of the C&I(the Aurora to Forreston line) and it’s 
building through town, the history of the other two RR’s that passed through 
what are now the villages’ modern limits will be covered. Don’t know about the 
other two RRs ? Come to the presentation, as they did exist, one until 1948. 

Also discussed will be the “Q” passenger trains, both local and long distance 
that ran through town. The head on collision that occurred between two of them 
right at Main St. in 1918. As well, The local way freight will be mentioned. 
There will also be discussion of through freight history on the line.

The mostly unknown hidden gem of the day will be details on the Burlington’s 
spur that ran well over two miles out into the country NW of town to bring back 
gravel to numerous points on the system from the Kaneville esker. An esker was 
a river that ran under a glacier from melting snow and ice that created gravel 
ridges in its wake. The Kaneville esker was the longest esker in Illinois 
before the “Q” and others, mined it off. There will be photos and maps showing 
the mining and length and location of the spur as well as data as to where the 
gravel was used(courtesy of the BRHS archive). You won’t find this spur in any 
employee timetable or special instruction. It is only by close research of 
historical plat maps, research and conversations with long gone “Q” employees 
that your speaker is able to share these details. This gravel deposit was one 
of many the Burlington worked on the Aurora Division that will someday be 
covered in a BRHS Bulletin article entitled “That Good Aurora Gravel”.
