Really enjoyed reading “Jeeps” in Bulletin 71.

Noting that approval for the purchase of the troop kitchen cars was sought in March 1947 (page 28) and, according to Joe Douda’s roster, the first conversion was in June 1947, I was surprised to find the attached piece in Railway Age vol. 123 page 792 of 8 November 1947. The press release, 5 days before publication, referred to the offer to buy 1,290 “wartime troop sleepers” for just $1,200 each.

The War Assets Administration had advertised a total of 1,894 troop sleepers (at $2,880 or $3,780 each) out of the 2,400 constructed. Were the 1,200 sleepers sought the residue out of the total 2,400 cars for which no offer had been made?

I presume that the sleepers that had been purchased following the March advert would have been released at about the same time as the kitchen cars.
